(As I see it, there's room for only one eccentric narcissist in this universe, and his name is Varrick.) In fact, the one thing I really enjoyed about Wu's scenes was that Mako was also annoyed by him. With only so much time in each episode, I don't have much patience for rants about spa days and strawberry allergies. Obviously, this is a character we're supposed to hate, but even in that context, I wasn't that amused by him here. In Republic City, we were introduced to Prince Wu (Sunil Malhotra), the soon-to-be Earth King. Unfortunately, not all political plot lines can be as enjoyable as that. True to form, it looks like Book Four's "villain" is shaping up to be more than just an evil tyrant.

Later, we also learned that her regime wasn't entirely corrupt, as evidenced by her soldiers offering food and goods to the people of Yai (albeit at the cost of liberty). The thing is, that scene was intense, and it told us a lot about Kuvira's ulterior motives.

The scene between Kuvira and the governor, for example, was basically just about a contract needing to be signed. More than that, it actually kinda worked. Such a rad visual.ĭid someone say badass?Additionally, it was interesting to see the premiere pull a "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," if you will - that is, injecting heavy politics into the underlying conflict. But also, I'm always impressed with the creators' ability to create new and inventive fighting styles for their characters - in Kuvira's case, using metal bands to incapacitate her enemies. First, I love the idea of a brash, military enforcer as an antagonist, especially coming off of Zaheer's egalitarian ex-convict. Speaking of reunification, the premiere also reintroduced us to Captain Kuvira (voiced by Zelda Williams), who we briefly met in Book Three's "Enter the Void." For me, this character was easily the standout of the premiere, for a few reasons. For Bolin, this meant the Earth Kingdom's reunification force. As a result, we got to jump straight into a far more compelling storyline for Opal and Bolin, as they clashed over their opposing groups. By skipping ahead three years, it only took a few lines to explain Kai and Opal's current dating situation (rather than going through the tedious courtships we normally see on this show). Another nice thing about the time jump? The established relationships. From the duo's very first fight with the bandits, I was completely sold on the idea that they'd been doing this for awhile. Particularly in this instance, the time jump did wonders for their character growth and teamwork dynamic. Honestly, this was probably the most we'd seen either of them do since their characters were introduced in Book Three. Nice duds.Given the airbenders more proactive role in the Earth Kingdom, it was fun to see Kai and Opal as stand-ins for the new-and-improved Air Nomads.

As an aside, I'm already a fan of the airbenders' new flying-squirrel jumpsuits - a fitting update (no pun intended), considering the now-passé style of the ancient Air Nomads (although I'm sure Tenzin put up a fight over the new uniforms). As expected, the Air Nomads seemed to have been doing their Jedi thing for the last few years, going from town to town and helping restore the damage done by Zaheer's liberation of Ba Sing Se. I was pleasantly surprised by Kai and Opal's return in "After All These Years," which offered a lot more insight into the political landscape of not just the Air Nation, but the Earth Kingdom too. This event alone was a good indicator of the time that had passed between books, forerunning even more significant changes for the characters. One such improvement was the completion of Varrick's magnet-powered rail system, which was alluded to in Book Three's Zaofu arc and later backed by Asami's Future Industries. The WPA-style opening was a quick and fun way to catch up on some of the improvements made in Republic City.
